The Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics: Essay Contest 2009
The Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest is an annual competition designed to challenge college students to analyze the urgent ethical issues confronting them in today’s complex world. Students are encouraged to write thought-provoking personal essays that raise questions, single out issues and are rational arguments for ethical action.
This year’s Suggested Topics are as follows:
* What does your own experience tell you about the relationship between politics and ethics and, in particular, what could be done to make politics more ethical?
* Articulate with clarity an ethical issue you have encountered and analyze what it has taught you about ethics and yourself.
* Carefully examine the ethical aspects or implications of a major literary work, a film or a significant piece of art.
* Clearly analyze the relationship between religion and ethics in today’s world.
* How does a recent political or cultural event shed light on the ethics of rebellion/revolution?
Full-time undergraduate juniors and seniors at accredited four-year colleges and universities in the US are welcome to enter the Essay Contest.
Awards:
First Prize: $5000
Second Prize: $2500
Third Prize: $1500

The following question was asked:
For question one do you want us to discuss why Argument 1 fails, Argument 2 fails, Argument 3 fails and so on. Or do you just want an overview and explanation of why all the arguments fail put into one or two paragraphs.
Question one is asking for something common to all the arguments; so you don’t (and shouldn’t) go through each of the arguments: that would take way more than a page.
On question 4: the question requires connecting the conception of God discussed in class with the existence of the problem of evil: that is, if you change the conception how does that effect the problem? What is it about the conception that leads to the existence of the problem?
If you have further questions, do not hesitate to email me.

Philosophy Club President Matt Riddle has sent the following:
Philosophy Club will hold its first meeting next Monday (October 6) from 5-6 pm upstairs in the Lion’s Den. If the Lion’s Den is unsuitable we will change our subsequent meeting location.
Our topic of discussion will be Religion and Philosophy. What exactly is religion? Philosophy? Are the two opposed or intertwined? Do you value one over the other? Why?
Come prepared to discuss the dicey debate of religion and philosophy and bring a friend at 5pm on Monday (October 6))! All are welcome.
